All tours are given by professional educators. Evergreen Farms tours are all based on the state wide curriculum and  provide a hands-on laboratory for any science curriculum.  The tours are also adapted for older groups and adults who want to know a little bit about planting, farming and history. Tours are $5 per student with teachers and adults free. Grant monies have been  received  from the Texas Department of Agriculture for enhancing the following tours.

  Fall Harvest:  October 11 - November 12, 2010

This tour is based on the plant cycle and explores the parts of the plant and how they contribute to the growth of the plant. The garden is one of the stops on the wagon ride.   Depending on the age group expansion of the activities will be explored. The tour follows with a pumpkin hunt among the trees. Each student will select their own pie pumpkin as well as make their own plant to reinforce the lesson on plants.

Educational Tree:  November 15 - December 21, 2010

This tour explores the tree cycle as it relates to the trees at Evergreen Farms.  Students will see the tree cycle from beginning to end and what is involved in making it work.  They will be exposed to eco systems and how they are a major part of the environment at Evergreen Farms.  To reinforce what they learned on the farm students will take home items to remind them of the tree cycle.

Little Bit of Texas:  April - May 2011

Evergreen Farms was a part of the early development of Texas during the Mexican rule and was one of the early Spanish land grants.  This tour will explore the Spanish Land grant system  and how families survived without computers, cell phones and fast food. The farm is located on the site of Hogeye which was the settlement before the railroad established the town of Elgin.  Lots of Texas history occurred in this area and students will experience what it must have been like to live and survive on this land in  late 1800.    Using the authentic chuck wagon on the farm, a lesson on the cattle drives is included along with actual cooking demonstrations. Participants will learn basic skills in orienteering as they master the skill of the compass and finding their way around the farm.  Each student will receive a Texas Bandana after completing the orienteering course.   This tour is open to fourth graders and those who have studied Texas history.

 Spring Garden:  April-May, 2011

Back by popular demand is the Spring Garden tour.  The Plant cycle is stressed along with the hands-on experience of the garden.  Students will help harvest from the garden by digging up potatoes, picking an ear of corn, cutting broccoli and snapping a sprig of dill for making pickles.
